A First Visit to Budapest, What to See and Where to Go

I wanted to give you a snapshot of my latest visit to Budapest.  The capital of Hungary is an amazing city with a complicated past.  I am under no illusion that I can give you the ultimate guide to Budapest, or the 25 things you absolutely must do in Budapest: that is not my aim here.  To do such a video, or blog post, would be to demean the residents and tour guides who work in this wonderful European city full time.

Instead I hope I can give you an idea of what it is like to be a first time traveller to Budapest.  The things you might see, and the places you might go.  It is to show you why I believe Budapest has a place on a European itinerary.

I will be writing up more of my thoughts about the city soon, and I’ve already published a review of the hotel I stayed in.

Places visited in this video:

Matthias Church & Fisherman’s Bastion – Castle District

Sándor Palace – Change of the Guard

Shoes on the Danube Bank – WWII

Memorial Holocaust Memorial Park & Great Synagogue

Ruin Bars in the Jewish District

Vajdahunyad Castle in the City Park Széchenyi Thermal Baths

Franz Liszt Academy for a Live Concert

Great Market Hall

Saint Stephen’s Basilica

Lumas Gallery – Photography and art limited editions free entry

Secrets of Buda castle tour with Budapest Explorers – our guide Judit was excellent. I recommend doing this tour early in you visit to get some historical context of the city.

Food Tour with Foodapest – such a great way to experience the gastronomy of Hungary, and meet fellow travellers at the same time! It is worth visiting their site as they have a lot of information about food in Budapest and even some recipes!

Danube River Cruise with Duna Cruises – smaller boats for a more intimate feel. The Prosecco is included!
